Library & Technology

About Urban's Library

The Urban Middle School Library welcomes students and staff to utilize our ever-expanding collection of books, databases, and makerspace. Library visits are scheduled for every other week with students' language arts classes. During this time, students participate in various activities to expand their library and information literacy skills and are given time to check out library materials. Additional visits are also scheduled to help support specific curriculum needs (i.e. research projects).

Students are welcome to use the library after school, as it is open until 4:00 PM on Monday through Friday.

Library Resources

Sora Logo

Sora

SASD Libraries are excited to offer Sora to SASD students and staff through a partnership with WSDLC. Sora is a digital reading app that provides ebooks and audiobooks to students and staff. Students access Sora using their Google credentials.

Mission of the Library Program

  • Promote literacy and a love of reading
  • Teach information literacy skills (how to find, evaluate, organize, and use information)
  • Help students learn to use technology safely, ethically, and efficiently
  • Support students having difficulty with their technology (troubleshooting and repair)
  • Provide open and free access to a wide range of ideas and viewpoints
  • Offer students a friendly, non-judgemental place where they can feel welcome and valued

Circulation Policies

Students may check out up to 5 items at a time and keep them for two weeks. If they haven't finished a book when it is due, students are able to bring it in and renew up to two times.

We do not charge late fees. Students will receive weekly email reminders for any fines or overdue materials. If a book is lost or damage it so badly it must be discarded, students will be charged for the replacement cost.

Our library program increases student learning by...

  • Providing books for pleasure reading and to support the school's curriculum
  • Recommending books students might enjoy
  • Assisting with research projects
  • Coordinating the 1-to-1 Chromebook program at school
  • Helping students and teachers with technology problems or questions
  • Instruction on how to use online resources such as databases
  • Providing a welcoming space conducive to reading or study
  • Exploring creativity with our Maker Kits and monthly Maker Projects
  • Instruction in using libraries comfortably and confidently (catalog searching, using call numbers, understanding the Dewey Decimal System, checking out ebooks)

Chromebooks

Since the 2015-2016 school year, all middle and high school students in the Sheboygan Area School District have been supplied with a Chromebook device. This device is the property of the SASD. The Chromebook will allow students access to Google Apps for Education, educational web-based tools, and many other useful websites. The Chromebook is an educational tool that is not intended for gaming or social networking.
